With the modernization of communication systems early this century the need for competent, timely and cost effective submarine cable contractors. Fred Devine Diving and Salvage Co., has long been a leader in the field of submarine cable installation, inspection and repair.

From our jet-sled plow to our 202 foot vessel, the SALVAGE CHIEF, no project is too large or too small. The use of the SALVAGE CHIEF allows us the flexibility to support around the clock operations in virtually any location. Some very unique operating conditions have made it necessary to modify and in some cases design and build equipment to meet specific needs. When we assisted AT&T installing the underwater cable repair shore-end transition for their first fiber optic cable between California and Hawaii, we modified existing equipment on board the SALVAGE CHIEF to allow simultaneous lay and burial, through the surf zone and out to sea, of this very sensitive cable. The methods developed successfully placed there cable without damage in a very accurate and timely manner. Due to the success of this project we have since modified our jet-sled to provide this service in inland waters.

Our list of clients includes QWest, AT&T, Portland General Electric, Pacific Power and Light and Multnomah County, Oregon. We assisted Portland General Electric when an inbound vessel sheared a main power cable installed across the Willamette River. In less than half the time allowed for the project we recovered, repaired, and reinstalled their cable.
